The “why” behind On Our Mind

Hi and welcome to the first post for On Our Mind. You may be asking yourself, why is this necessary. Great question- and I have an answer. This is an idea that was been in the making for some time based on my experiences as a counselor/therapist. I have found that time and time again, I seem to be hearing very similar themes in my sessions with various collaborators (clients) around the same periods of time; almost as if life is creating the same opportunities for growth though these individuals have no connection to each other. (Why “collaborator”- that’s simple- that’s exactly how I approach counseling/therapy. It is a joint effort toward a common goal- wellbeing…but I digress.)

As I hear these themes, a term comes to me and I name this theme. Of course, these themes may have a name under a specific approach, but it is impossible for one person to know everything. When this naming occurs, it is often like a critical puzzle piece has been added and the picture becomes clearer for both me and the collaborator. And this space seemed to make the most sense for sharing these thoughts, ideas, and language/terms.

Why the name- that’s simple too! These concepts are often created from more than one mind and it is a way for me to acknowledge the collaboration that occurs. Also, as the practice grows, other counselors will be encouraged to share their experiences as well.

I am not a writer, so please know that these posts will not be eloquent, but will be the simplest form of expression possible to hopefully allow people to connect, and continue building context of their experiences, adding another puzzle piece and finding more choice. The hope and plan is that there will be a post monthly, and please understand that sometimes this may not be possible.

Til next time.
